Election Watch Update - Feb 25

Nawaz Sharif speculated on Sunday that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement leaving the government was a ‘sham’ but did not comment on the PML-N and the MQM allying for the elections. He said his party had confidence in the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The MQM’s application on redrawing constituencies in Karachi was dismissed on Monday by the Supreme Court.

Ahmed Ludhianvi, the head of the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, confirms that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and other political parties have approached it to negotiate seat adjustments. The PML-N has denied the claim.

Opinions are split in Islamabad on who has the authority to set a date for the elections – the president or the caretaker government.
